FIRST READING The first Reading for the Fourth Sunday after Pentecost is written in Chapter 25 of Genesis, beginning at Verse 19. Genesis 25:19-34 Jacob gains the birthright of Esau CEV
Genesis 25:19-34 19Isaac was the son of Abraham, 20and he was forty years old when he married Rebekah, the daughter of Bethuel. She was also the sister of Laban, the Aramean from northern Syria. Almost twenty years later, 21Rebekah still had no children. So Isaac asked the LORD to let her have a child, and the LORD answered his prayer.
Genesis 25:19-34 22Before Rebekah gave birth, she knew she was going to have twins, because she could feel them inside her, fighting each other. She thought, "Why is this happening to me?" Finally, she asked the LORD why her twins were fighting, 23and he told her. "Your two sons will become two separate nations. The younger of the two will be stronger, and the older son will be his servant.“
Genesis 25:19-34 24When Rebekah gave birth, 25the first baby was covered with red hair, so he was named Esau. 26The second baby grabbed on to his brother's heel, so they named him Jacob. Isaac was sixty years old when they were born.
Genesis 25:19-34 27As Jacob and Esau grew older, Esau liked the outdoors and became a good hunter, while Jacob settled down and became a shepherd. 28Esau would take the meat of wild animals to his father Isaac, and so Isaac loved him more, but Jacob was his mother's favorite son.
Genesis 25:19-34 29One day, Jacob was cooking some stew, when Esau came home hungry 30and said, "I'm starving to death! Give me some of that red stew right now!" That's how Esau got the name "Edom." 31Jacob replied, "Sell me your rights as the first-born son." 32"I'm about to die," Esau answered. "What good will those rights do me?”
Genesis 25:19-34 33But Jacob said, "Promise me your birthrights, here and now!" And that's what Esau did. 34Jacob then gave Esau some bread and some of the bean stew, and when Esau had finished eating and drinking, he just got up and left, showing how little he thought of his rights as the first-born. This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God.
Psalm 119:105-112 CEV R: : The Psalm is Psalm 119 105Your word is a lamp that gives light wherever I walk. C: 106our laws are fair, and I have given my word to respect them all. R: 107I am in terrible pain! Save me, LORD, as you said you would. C: 108Accept my offerings of praise and teach me your laws.
Psalm 119:105-112 CEV R: 109I never forget your teachings, although my life is always in danger. C: 110Some merciless people are trying to trap me, but I never turn my back on your teachings.
Psalm 119:105-112 CEV R: 111They will always be my most prized possession and my source of joy. C: 112I have made up my mind to obey your laws forever, no matter what. C: Glory to the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit; As it was in the beginning is now and will be for ever. Amen.
Second reading R: The Second Reading is written in Chapter 8 of Romans, beginning at Verse 1. Romans 8:1-11 You are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit CEV
Second reading If you belong to Christ Jesus, you won't be punished. 2The Holy Spirit will give you life that comes from Christ Jesus and will set you free from sin and death. 3The Law of Moses cannot do this, because our selfish desires make the Law weak.
Second reading But God set you free when he sent his own Son to be like us sinners and to be a sacrifice for our sin. God used Christ's body to condemn sin. 4He did this, so that we would do what the Law commands by obeying the Spirit instead of our own desires. 5People who are ruled by their desires think only of themselves.
Second reading Everyone who is ruled by the Holy Spirit thinks about spiritual things. 6If our minds are ruled by our desires, we will die. But if our minds are ruled by the Spirit, we will have life and peace. 7Our desires fight against God, because they do not and cannot obey God's laws. 8If we follow our desires, we cannot please God.
Second reading 9You are no longer ruled by your desires, but by God's Spirit, who lives in you. People who don't have the Spirit of Christ in them don't belong to him. 10But Christ lives in you. So you are alive because God has accepted you, even though your bodies must die because of your sins.
Second reading 11Yet God raised Jesus to life! God's Spirit now lives in you, and he will raise you to life by his Spirit. This is the Word of the Lord C: Thanks be to God.
GOSPEL M: The Holy Gospel is written in Chapter 11 of the Gospel according to St Matthew beginning at verse 16. C: Glory to you, O Lord.
M: 1That same day Jesus left the house and went out beside Lake Galilee, where he sat down to teach. 2Such large crowds gathered around him that he had to sit in a boat, while the people stood on the shore. 3Then he taught them many things by using stories.
4While the farmer was scattering the seed, some of it fell along the road and was eaten by birds.
5Other seeds fell on thin, rocky ground and quickly started growing because the soil wasn't very deep. 6But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched and dried up, because they did not have enough roots.
7Some other seeds fell where thornbushes grew up and choked the plants.
8But a few seeds did fall on good ground where the plants produced a hundred or sixty or thirty times as much as was scattered. 9If you have ears, pay attention!
18Now listen to the meaning of the story about the farmer: 19The seeds that fell along the road are the people who hear the message about the kingdom, but don't understand it. Then the evil one comes and snatches the message from their hearts.
20The seeds that fell on rocky ground are the people who gladly hear the message and accept it right away. 21But they don't have deep roots, and they don't last very long. As soon as life gets hard or the message gets them in trouble, they give up.
22The seeds that fell among the thornbushes are also people who hear the message. But they start worrying about the needs of this life and are fooled by the desire to get rich. So the message gets choked out, and they never produce anything.
