  2. The Introductory Paragraph • Establish time and place. • Create an explicit thesis statement. • Mention each of the sub-topics you will discuss as you support your thesis statement. The “Top Bun” 4-6 Sentences

  3. The Body Paragraphs • Identify your sub-topic in the first sentence. • Use the documents to back up your statements in each paragraph • Use a majority of all the documents given. • Remember point of view. • Bring in outside information if you can. The “Tasty” Part 5-10 Sentences Per Paragraph

  4. Demonstrating Point of View • Attribution:Cite the author by name or position. EXAMPLES: John Tyler, an English writer, said: “...” A Dominican monk in Florence described … NOT POV UNLESS YOU EXPLAIN !!!!

Demonstrating Point of View • Authorial Point of View:You show awareness that the gender, occupation, class, religion, nationality, political position or ethnic identity of the author could influence their views. EXAMPLE: Balthasar Rusow, a Lutheran pastor, wasnaturally upset by the celebration of a Saint’s Day since Lutherans don’t venerate saints.

  6. Demonstrating Point of View • Reliability / Accuracy:You question if the author of the document is in a position to be accurate. EXAMPLE: Niccolo Machiavelli’s book on the politicaltactics of a Renaissance prince is relaible because it was a first hand account from a statesman who observed the behavior of the prince, Cesare Borgia, formany years.

  7. Demonstrating Point of View • Tone or Intent:You examine the text of a document to determine its tone or the intent of the author. Useful technique for visual docs. EXAMPLE: In his great sculpture, David, Michelangelo wanted to convey the confidence, and even arrogance, of Renaissance Florence at the peak of its cultural influence in 16th century Europe.

  8. Demonstrating Point of View • Grouping Authors:You show an awareness that certain types of authors will express similar views. EXAMPLE: As northern Renaissance humanists, Erasmus, Sir Thomas More, and Cervantes all poked fun at the foibles and scandals of late medieval society as well as of their own.
