  2. Acinetobacter Baumannii • Classification: Bacteria – proteobacteria – gammaproteobacteria – pseudomadales – moraxellaceae • Aerobic bacteria – chemoheteroph. ( survives from oxygen and proteins in your blood stream) • Gram-negative • Rod shaped (bacillus – stapiylo)

  3. What is Acinetobacter? • Group of bacteria commonly found in the soil and water. It is also found on the skin of healthy people (this is how it transports). There are many species of this disease (all cause human disease), but Acinetobacter Baumannii is the most deadly and accounts for about 80% of infections. It is resistant to almost all antibiotics and very hard to get rid of.

  4. Symptoms • This disease causes multiple diseases ranging from pneumonia to serious blood or wound infections. • Persons who have a weakened immune system are at a greater risk of getting this disease.

  5. How do you get this disease? • Healthy people are at very little risk of getting this disease. People who have weakened immune systems, chronic lung disease, or diabetes may be more susceptible to the disease. • Persons who are hospitalized for long periods of time and on ventilator have the highest risk of catching the disease. • Acinetobacter is spread through person-to-person contact, contact with contaminated surfaces, or exposure to the environment.
