Why do we write? Author’s undertaking the endeavor of writing for many different reasons that often vary from text to text. However, these purposes can be largely broken into three main categories: To entertain To inform To persuade
Clues to Author’s Purpose Fiction, which is written to primarily entertain, will attempt to heavily draw its readers into the story. Some of the clues that tell readers a story is meant to entertain are: Onomatapoeia Oxymoron Simile/Metaphor Vivid Imagery Hyperbole. Persuasion is meant to get readers on the side of the author. Some of ways one can tell a writer is attempting this are through: Stats, Graphs, and Figures Words throughout the article that carry the same connotation Comparing and contrasting words (like, similar to, opposite, contrary) The author proposes alternatives The author uses opinions.
Clues to Author’s Purpose Finally, informational passages show concrete evidence: Dates and times Direct quotations Specific facts Large amounts of proper nouns.
