Leonardo Da Vinci • Da Vinci was born poor and wasn’t formally educated. • He began as a painter’s apprentice where he gained fame as an artist. • Focused most of his studies on science.
Leo’s Notebook • Very detailed. • Had notes on many things, not just inventions. • Written to be read in a mirror. • We believe he did this to prevent his ideas from being stolen.
The Scientist • He spent a lot of time studying the human body so his art was very lifelike. • He even examined dead bodies, against the command of the church. • He was a scientist, not just an artist.
Why now? • The breakdown of feudalism led to the growth of towns. • High population areas allow more specialized work and ultimately things like art and science. • The depression of the Black Death made people want to improve their world.
Why there? • New methods of trade and travel showed Europeans what the world had to offer. • People in Italy had great access to this because of living near the ocean. • Those with money wanted to show it off and so art became important.
Why them? • Only the rich could afford art and education. • Over time though more and more people became involved. (Everyone wants what the rich have.) • Ultimately the Renaissance changed people’s view of their place in the world.
