1. Government Shut-down In general • Spending may continue on active grants and contracts • NO budgetary or other changes that require agency approval are allowed • Expenditures made without the requisite prior approval are at risk and may not be reimbursed • Subcontractors may continue to spend FY 2013 funds. • Grants.gov is not operating – BWH RA is accepting and storing NIH grant applications.

2. Update your address in PeopleSoft Open enrollment for your 2014 benefits will take place Nov. 4 - 26, 2013. Open enrollment is the one time of year when all employees can make changes to their benefits. You will receive a packet with open enrollment instructions in the mail during the last week of October. This packet will be sent to the address you have listed in PeopleSoft as of Oct. 4, so it is important that your home and mailing addresses be up-to-date. Check by going to PeopleSoft HR Employee Self Service at: https://ibridge.partners.org  Log on using the same ID and password you use to sign on to your computer. 4. BWH Desktop encryption's next phase: Non-standard PC's Encrypting desktops is a requirement to qualify these devices for the regulatory "safe harbors" contained in state and federal breach reporting regulations. This is critically important as it ensures that stolen or lost desktops will not be subject to arduous investigations and potential regulatory actions that together generates large costs to the institution and lost time on behalf of both researcher and institutional staff. Current status:Managed (Standard) PC's upgraded to Windows 7 and encrypted: 85%Mac desktops under PEAS management and encrypted: 86% All non-standard desktop PCs must be brought to encryption standard. This may require replacement of some current PCs. All new PCs must be initiated with encryption installed. The Non-standard PC Encryption project is starting at 221 Longwood and will move out to other research sites ASAP. Jay Omobono is managing implementation in Derm and can address any questions.

5. Graduate Student Town Hall Oct. 15 at 5:30 p.m. at OBC 4002B Refreshments will be served The Office for Research Careers within the Center for Faculty Development & Diversity invites all graduate students doing research in BWH labs to attend a Town Hall meeting. This meeting will provide a forum for the graduate student community to come together to discuss opportunities and challenges, and to give feedback on their experiences and training environment to the BWH Senior Vice President of Research and Director of CFDD as well as the Faculty Director of the Office for Research Careers. 6. BWH-wide Women Residents & Fellows Roundtable October 16, 2013 4:00 - 5:30 PMShapiro Breakout Room Please join your colleagues from residency and fellowship programs throughout Brigham and Women’s Hospital for an opportunity to engage in a timely discussion on preparing women for careers in academic medicine. The program will offer participants the chance to join small roundtable discussion groups on issues such as negotiations, climbing the academic ladder, mentorship, choosing a career path, career and family balance, and leadership.  Each discussion will be led by an experienced woman faculty member. Society for Internationally Trained Women Faculty & Fellows • Date: Tuesday, Oct 08 Time: 12:00PM - 1:30PM • Location:HHMI The Society for Internationally Trained Women Faculty & Fellows is a small networking group for women physicians and scientists who were born or trained outside of the U.S. This meeting provides an opportunity for international women to share their unique experiences on working in academic medicine and adapting to a new city and country, and sometimes includes presentations on specific topics of interest to the group. The Center for Faculty Development & Diversity, in collaboration with the Center for Professionalism and Peer Support, is offering a series of workshops on mindfulness and reflection.  In these experiential group sessions, we will slow down the pace and engage in mindfulness and reflective practices that allows us to consider the challenge and opportunity for finding balance in our life and work. Participants are welcome to attend one or both sessions.
