  2. Street Triage Background • National Pilots announced by Home Secretary June 2013. Sussex one of four Forces selected • Funded by Department of Health & Home Office • Eastbourne project 1 year from October 2013. • Sussex first to go live • Hastings – Live February 2015

  3. Street Triage What is Street Triage? Clinical mental health staff accompanying police to emergency MH incidents. The clinical staff help officers decide on the best option for individuals in crisis, by: • Offering professional advice on the spot • Accessing health information systems • Identifying the right kind of support required for individuals • Helping to liaise with and access other care services • Working late shifts and all weekend in unmarked Police car

  4. Street Triage Aim of Street Triage • More timely intervention by mental health professionals • Reduction in unnecessary detentions through appropriate use of s136 • Reduction in patients being detained in police custody centres • Better outcomes for individual patients

Street Triage Benefits • Moving services into the community at the point of crisis • Focus on prevention and preventing escalation of situation • Providing GPs with details of each patient intervention • Improved partnership working Health/Police officers • Improved understanding of MH by police • Delivering commitments within the Mental Health Crisis Care Concordat • Improved outcomes and experiences for patients

Street Triage Current Position and Future • Eastbourne scheme funded to end March 2017 • Hastings funded to end March 2017 • Crawley & Worthing pilots funded to March 2017 – live Jan 2015 • National Evaluation of Pilots Summer 2015 • Kings College evaluation to establish Health cost benefits/savings • Consideration of Triage in all Concordat Action plans
