Chapter 13 – Module 40 Planning Our Energy Future
SustainableDesign An energy-efficient home. A sustainable building design incorporates proper solar orientation and landscaping as well as insulated windows, walls, and floors. In the Northern Hemisphere, a southern exposure allows the house to receive more direct rays from the Sun in winter when the path of the Sun is in the southern sky. Drought-tolerant vegetation
The Sun’s energy can be captured directly …and in-directly Passive Solar Energy Using passivesolar energy can lower your electricity bill without the need for pumps or other mechanical devices. • Example: building the house with windows along a south-facing wall which allows the Sun’s rays to warm the house in the Winter. Thermal mass A property of a building material that allows it to maintain heat or cold.

Benefits of Conservation and Efficiency • Many energy companies have an extra backup source of energy available to meet the peak demand, the greatest quantity of energy used at any one time. • Variable price structure - utility customers can pay less to use energy when demand is lowest and more during peak demand. About half the price!
Our Energy Future Smart grid An efficient, self-regulating electricity distribution network that accepts any source of electricity and distributes it automatically to end users. Using a smart grid. A smart grid optimizes the use of energy in a home by continuously coordinating energy use with energy availability.
How can we use less energy? • Energyefficiency • getting the same result from using a smaller amount of energy. Examples? • Energyconservation • finding ways to use less energy. Examples? It is possible to determine energy efficiency by calculating the energy return on energy investment (EROEI) EROI = Energy obtained from fuel ÷ Energy invested to obtain fuel The larger the value of EROI, the more efficient the fuel.
List these as examples of either “Energy Conservation” or “Energy Efficiency” on the table you started in the previous slide.
