Four Main Ideas • Be Prepared! • Be Respectful! • Be Yourself! • Use Good Techniques!
Be Prepared! • Do some research before the interview • Check your equipment before the interview • Have extra supplies that you might need • Have all the forms you need
Be on time Show interest when the person’s talking Inform the person about the project’s goals and your plans Don’t make promises you won’t or can’t keep Let the person review your work before you hand it in or publish it Be Respectful!
Be Yourself! • Relax! Treat the interview like a conversation with a new friend. • Help the other person to relax too.
Use Good Techniques! • Have general and specific questions ready. • Listen to the answers and ask follow-up questions • Use props to help jog memories. • Leave the recorder on unless asked to turn it off.
Use Good Techniques 2 • Use a tape recorder with an external microphone (one that is not in the recorder). • Place the microphone close to the interviewee’s voice.
