  2. CLEMENT OF ROME Served as leading Elder or Bishop in the church at Rome. Wrote a letter to the Corinthians known as “Clement I” He made frequent reference to the OT and Pauline Epistles. Died in 101 AD

  3. IGNATIUS OF ANTIOCH Served as Bishop of Antioch and the most famous of the group. His seven letters after his arrest emphasized unity in the Churches. He held that the church cannot function its ministries without a Bishop. Died in 115 AD

  4. POLYCARP OF SMYRNA Disciple of the Apostle John His letters emphasized faith in Christ and its application in daily living. Died in 155 AD

  5. PAPIAS OF PHRYGIA Wrote the “Interpretations of the sayings of the Lord”. Also a disciple of the Apostle John Died 155 AD

  6. Other writings

  7. The Shepherd of Hermas Written between 90 and 150 AD It includes 5 Visions, 12 Mandates and 10 Similitudes. It deals with repentance and forgiveness of sins after baptism.

  8. The Epistle of Barnabas Written in Alexandria between 70 and 130 AD Allegorical in nature, engaging in gross typology and numerology. It emphasizes that keeping the law was not necessary because Christ’s work is sufficient.

  9. Didache or Teachings of the Twelve Originated from Alexandria or Syria A church manual divided into 4 parts 1. Christian ethics (Chap. 1- 6) 2. Liturgical matters (7 – 10) 3. Ministry and Church government (11 – 15) 4. Second coming and the end of the world (16)

  10. “The Apostolic Fathers must be evaluated in accordance with their apparent purpose: to exhort and edify the church.”
