e-poster # 3310 RR 02584 Extending the Sensitivity Volume of Surface Coils for Spectroscopy at 7T by Using Deuterium Water Bags Deborah Douglas, Ivan Dimitrov, Jimin Ren, A. Dean Sherry, Craig R. Malloy Advanced Imaging Research Center (AIRC)
Extending the sensitivity of surface coils at 7T for MRS with the use of D20, e-poster # 3310 INTRODUCTION Ultra-high field spectroscopy poses new challenges caused by dielectric effects in samples with size comparable to the RF wavelength. INHOMOGENEOUS B1 SURFACE COILS • B1 inhomogeneity INCREASES at higher field strengths. • Surface coils still provide for high SNR. The use of other dielectric pads for B1 shimming for imaging is well known, their use in spectroscopy has not been evaluated.
Extending the sensitivity of surface coils at 7T for MRS with the use of D20, e-poster # 3310 Data Acquisition • Data was acquired on a whole-body 7T (Achieva, Philips Medical Systems, Cleveland, USA) • Used a partial volume (7-cm radius half cylinder) quadrature surface coil. The coil had two partially overlapping 12 x12 cm proton loops.
Extending the sensitivity of surface coils at 7T for MRS with the use of D20, e-poster # 3310 Phantom Test Utilizing D2O bags in directed extending the sensitivity volume of surface coils to improve SNR in proton spectroscopy at 7.0T. H2O bags were used for illustrative purposes
Extending the sensitivity of surface coils at 7T for MRS with the use of D20, e-poster # 3310 D2O bags are preferred over water bags, as they will not introduce extraneous signal that may cause folding artifacts or hamper image windowing / leveling.
Extending the sensitivity of surface coils at 7T for MRS with the use of D20, e-poster # 3310 7T MR Spectroscopy ParametersTibialis Anterior (TA) Muscle Spectroscopic sampling of the tibialis anterior was chosen due to its increased distance from the coil and the inability to perform spectroscopy on it using conventional methods. • TR 2s • TE 140ms • NSA 128 • Voxel 15x15x15 • First scan Full prep • All others scans same prep
Extending the sensitivity of surface coils at 7T for MRS with the use of D20, e-poster # 3310 T2 Fast Spin Echo (FSE) Calf No Bag 1L Sterile Water Bag 1L D20 Bag STEAM
Extending the sensitivity of surface coils at 7T for MRS with the use of D20, e-poster # 3310 D20 bag is good for short and long TE MRS No Bag 1L D20 Bag TE 20 ms TE 140 ms There was a 2-fold increase in the SNR of STEAM spectra from identical voxels
Extending the sensitivity of surface coils at 7T for MRS with the use of D20, e-poster # 3310 D20 bag increases the overall SNR in MRS
Extending the sensitivity of surface coils at 7T for MRS with the use of D20, e-poster # 3310 7T Brain MRI and MRS using D2O bag (Quad Transmit coil, 16-ch receive) 500ml de-ionized H20 CaTi03 bag Right side of head 250 ml D20 Bag Right side of head No Bag
Extending the sensitivity of surface coils at 7T for MRS with the use of D20, e-poster # 3310 7T Brain MRI and MRS using D2O bag (Quad Transmit coil, 16-ch receive) 250 ml D20 Bag Right side of head 500 ml D20 around entire head
Extending the sensitivity of surface coils at 7T for MRS with the use of D20, e-poster # 3310 RR 02584 Conclusion We demonstrated both in phantoms and in vivo, that SNR can be dramatically improved in MRS at 7.0T, by using a D2O bag. Advanced Imaging Research Center (AIRC)
