  1. THINKING LIKE A SCIENTISTSECTION 3 • Read about Alexander Fleming on page 20 • ALCHEMY is an important part of the development of science. The goal of alchemy was to turn other metals, such as lead, into gold. Obviously this was not a successful endeavor! • Alchemists did advance science and research through the development of the tools and techniques used during the experiments.

  2. Antoine and Marie Ann Lavoisier • By the 1500’s alchemy was shifting to science • During the 1600’s science began to flourish in Britain due to the support of King Charles II. • During the late 1700’s Antoine Lavoisier’s began to revolutionize science. • He developed measuring tools such as balances that allowed for exacting measurements to be made.

  3. HIS EXPERIMNETS • It was an accepted explanation that materials burned because they contained phlogiston. Lavoisier was able to show that oxygen was required for materials to burn. He proved it was oxygen by placing a lighted candle under a bell jar with a mouse. When the candle went out, the mouse went soon after! • Marie Anne made drawings of his experiments and translated English scientific papers.

  4. THE REVOLUTION • Lavoisier worked for the French government as a tax collector. He performed this work to fund his research and experiments. • Many of his experiments were preformed to try to improve the lives of common people • This association with taxation caused him to be arrested, tried and beheaded.

  5. SCIENTIFIC METHOD • PROBLEM • RESEARCH • HYPOTHESIS • EXPERIMENTS • DATA • CONCLUSION • REPEAT

  6. PROBLEM SOLVING IN CHEMISTRYSECTION 4 • NUMERIC PROBLEMS use the following steps to solve problems • Analyze • Calculate • Evaluate

  7. CONCEPTUAL PROBLEMS use the following steps to solve problems • Analyze • Solve

  8. QUICK LAB • BUBBLES on page 23. Read and be prepared to perform the lab.
