Forster wrote Short story “The Machine Stops”, describing internet. Differences between an Ipad and an Android Pad Its like the difference between a Mac and a PC • Designed and marketed - iPad by Apple – Android – by numerous Corporations but all use the same operating system owned by Google • Operating System - iPad runs on iOS operating system, (proprietary, not free) – Android is the operating system and is free. • Revenue - Apple generates revenue by selling Ipads – Google generates no revenue from the sale of Android pads • Most of Googles revenue (96 % in 2011) comes from advertising on it search results • The companies associated with Ipads and Android Pads operate on completely different business models

How the Internet appears on a tablet But first, how do you operate a tablet or a phone • By gestures, ie touching the screen is some way (See next slide) I will be showing how an Android Tablet works. (you will see it operating on your screen) If you want to know how I am doing this, ask me at the end of the session
How the Internet appears on a tablet The gestures functions of a tablet/phone. To Select or Activate something, touch it. Touch & hold : Touch & hold an item on the screen by touching it and not lifting your finger until an action occurs. Drag: Touch & hold an item for a moment and then, without lifting your finger, move your finger on the screen until you reach the target position. For example, you can drag to reposition shortcuts on the Home screen. Swipe or slide: Quickly move your finger across the surface of the screen, without pausing when you first touch (so you don't drag something instead) . For example, you can slide a Home screen left or right to view the other Home screens. Double-tap : Tap quickly twice on a webpage, map, or other screen to zoom. For example, double-tap a webpage in Browser to zoom in, and double-tap again to zoom out. Pinch: In some apps (such as Maps, Browser, and Gallery), you can zoom in and out by placing two fingers on the screen at once and pinching them together (to zoom out) or spreading them apart (to zoom in).
How the Internet appears on a tablet Getting around the screen Back: Opens the previous screen you were working in, even if it was in a different app. Once you back up to the Home screen, you can’t go back any further in your history. Home: Opens Home. If you're viewing a left or right Home screen, opens the central Home screen. Recent apps Opens a list of thumbnail images of apps you've worked with recently. To open an app, touch it. To remove a thumbnail from the list, swipe it left or right. All Apps: Touch it to see all your apps and widgets

How to download apps to a tablet or phone connected to the Internet 3 Methods: • Directly from the device (via Google Market, now called play store) • Initiated from a PC, but gets downloaded to the device • Copied to the device and use an App installer App to install it
Some Suggested Android Apps • Any File manager (to manage files like is done in Windows Explorer, My Computer) • An App installer (if you want to install non-Google market apps) • Hackers Keyboard (makes keyboarding easier than the standard Android keyboard) • Wifi Keyboard (Allows keyboard input to be made from a computer) • Call Announcer, on a phone (speaks the contact name when a call is received) • Viber (Allows calls to be made via data services to other Viber users so costs less than mobile calls) • Wifi file Transfer (copy and move files to/from PC controlled by PC wirelessly) • Any Ebook reader (allows ebooks to be read) • Google Latitude (See where friends are, let others know where you are) • Simple Spreadsheet (do simple spreadsheet functions) • Open Office Documents (read any Open office document) • Documents to Go (read or write any MS Office file) • Google My Tracks (record where you have been) • Where’s My Droid (shows where you phone is if lost/stolen) • Motion Detection (can use for home security, takes a photo if something moves and emails it to you)
