Four Norwegians WhoExpanded the World By Kaitie Ban Grade 5 7/12/05
How did each of these Norwegians expand the world? • Roald Amundsen • Leif Eriksson • Edvard Grieg • Thor Heyerdahl
Edvard Grieg (1843-1907) • Kept Norwegian heritage alive by incorporating traditional folk songs into his compositions • His music become associated with a patriotic expression of the Norwegian national character and landscape - at a very early stage in his career.
Edvard Grieg • Wrote background music for many of the playwrights of the day. (Ibsen, Holberg) • The Holberg Suite celebrates the Scandinavian Molière, the Norwegian playwright Ludvig Holberg, an almost exact contemporary of J.S. Bach and Handel. • Grieg collaborated with Henrik Ibsen, providing the incidental music for the play Peer Gynt.
Bela Bartok Hans Christian Andersen Maurice Ravel Claude Debussy Edvard Grieg • Encouraged and influenced many composers - both in his time and still today.
What do I think? • I love to listen to the music of Grieg. His music is exciting. • Grieg helped to expand the world by encouraging and supporting other composers. He also translated “Norway” into his music.
Leif Eriksson((975-1020) • Was one of several thought to have discovered America. • Did Eriksson? • Did Columbus? • Did the Chinese?
Leif Eriksson • Helped to convert Norwegians to Christianity • King Olaf I converted him to Christianity and later sent him back to Greenland to win its Viking settlers over to the Christian faith.
Leif Eriksson • Was thought to have discovered America
What Do I Think? • Eriksson grew up wanting to explore new places. Instead of being a violent man - like his father - he worked to bring peace and cooperation to the people he met. • Eriksson was a good leader. He was kind and honest. Because of this, people wanted to do their best for him - and follow him on his expeditions.
Thor Heyerdahl (1914-2002 • Suggested and proved the theory that the Pacific Islands could have been settled by South American natives.
Thor Heyerdahl • Extended South American archaeology for the first time in to the open Pacific Ocean
Thor Heyerdahl • Proved the theory of migration for Southeast Asia and the islands adjacent showing that they were one major source area of the peoples and cultures of the Pacific Islands and South America
What Do I Think? • I was amazed to at the determination Heyerdahl had in proving his migration theory. 101 days in the Pacific on a balsa raft! Surrounded often by sharks! It shows what you can do when you have the desire to find the answers to your curiosity.
Roald Amundsen (1872–1928 ) • Navigated the Northwest Passage between the Canadian mainland and its Arctic islands • a treacherous ice-bound route that wound between the northern Canadian mainland and Canada's Arctic islands. The hard journey took three years to complete. Amundsen and his crew had to wait while the frozen sea around them thawed enough to allow for navigation.
Roald Amundsen • Was the first to reach the South Pole • All the world thought he was headed in the complete opposite direction. • He had secretly ruled out attempting to reach the North Pole, because Americans Robert Peary and Frederick Cook had already laid claim to that feat. Amundsen even kept his plans for a South Pole expedition a secret from officials within the Norwegian government.
Roald Amundsen • Was the first to touch the two poles in a lifetime.
What Do I Think? • Wow! How could Amundsen go through all that ice, snow, and COLD - just to find the North and South Pole? • Studying about his accomplishments showed me again that when you are determined about your goal, you can go through all kinds of hardships. • I am glad that there are people who are willing to sacrifice in order to make these kinds of discoveries - and then share their knowledge with everyone else.
