  1. Exponents

  2. Question:What are exponents and when will I have to use them?

  3. Answer:Exponents are the little numbers that rest in the sky next to a number. It tells you how many times to multiply the number by itself.

  4. Answer (cont.)We learn about exponents just before we begin order of operations. You will also see them in algebra and geometry!

  5. Let’s get started with your graphic organizer! This is a great study tool to look over before a quiz/test.

  6. Is there an exponent key on the calculator (TI-34II)?

  7. Yes!!!!!Find the “^” key directly beneath the pi symbol.

  8. Try 56

  9. Did you type in…5^6 to get 15,625

  10. Good job!You will have time to practice with the calculator later but for now, make a note at the bottom of your graphic organizer about which key to use for exponents.

  11. Exponents: 94What is the base? What is the exponent?Write the expression in words. What is the value?

  12. Exponents: 50What is the base? What is the exponent?Write the expression in words. What is the value?

  13. Exponents: k3What is the base? What is the exponent?Write the expression in words. What is the value if k is equal to 4?

  14. Exponential Form:Write 3 x 3 x 3 x 3 x 3 in exponential form.Write the power as a product:6 x 6 x 6 x 6 = 5 x 5 x 5 =

  15. Big numbers:How can 1,000,000,000,000 be written using exponents?

  16. It’s time to apply what we have learned to some order of operations problems…

  17. Solve by showing your work:a2 + 5, if a = 4

  18. Did you get….42 + 516 + 521

  19. Solve by showing your work:35 - b3, if b = 2

  20. Did you get….35 – 2335-827

  21. Solve by showing your work:108 – 70 - c2, if c = 9

  22. Did you get….108 – 70 – 92108 – 1 – 81107 – 8126

  23. Well Done!Tomorrow we will begin where we left off….order of operations.
