Families Alkali Metals Alkaline Earth Metals Transition Metals Other Metals Metalloids Non-metals Halogens Noble Gases Rare Earth (Lanthanides & Actinides)
Alkali Metals Silver, soft, solids Extremely Reactive React especially well with Water Used in a lot of medicines and supplements
Alkaline Earth Metals Ranges from white-silver-gray color, soft solid Pretty reactive, very flammable- burns brightly when lit Used in Flares and fireworks
Transition Metals Have a wide variety of appearances- can be silver, gold, black, bronze, etc. All are solids, with really varied densities and malleability Are not very reactive at all Are used in almost everything in everyday life- cars, jewelry, buildings, etc.
Metalloids Have properties of both metals and non-metals All solids, are gray and shiny Are semi-conductors, meaning they can conduct electricity- but not as well as metals Are not very reactive Used in computer parts and electrical circuits
Non-metals Consist of both solids (Carbon, Phosphorus, Sulfur) and gases (Hydrogen, Nitrogen, Oxygen) Solids are colorful (black, brown, and yellow) while gases are clear, colorless, and odorless Are pretty reactive, can react with almost anything and everything Are naturally found in living things and used to produce materials like plastics and medicines
Halogens Only family to have solid, liquid, and gas elements A very colorful group, there are green, red, and black elements all in this family Are extremely reactive, especially with the Alkali Metals found in group 1A Used in a lot of cleaning agents, used to purify water, bleaches, insecticides, etc.
Noble Gases Are all clear, colorless, odorless gases Are completely unreactive, do produce light when an electric current is ran through them Used in Lights
Rare Earth Elements The rare earths are silver, silvery-white, or gray metals, are very shiny but dull easily The metals have high electrical conductivity, light producing capabilities, and strong magnetic capabilities Used in a lot of high tech equipment and materials, especially in the use of high-powered magnets
