Progress in the General Curriculum ESE 380 January 22, 2009
Quick Write Explain why students with disabilities are expected to meet the same curricular standards as students without disabilities. Why is this appropriate and beneficial?
Characteristics of Inclusion • Home-school placement • The principle of natural proportions • Restructuring teaching and learning • Age- and grade-appropriate placements
High Expectations • Despite the difficulties of involving students with disabilities in standards-based reform, it is important to hold them to high expectations and provide them with access to a challenging curriculum. Underlying high expectations is the value of full citizenship: to deny students the opportunity to benefit from the general education curriculum may actually limit their education and postschool opportunities. Essentially, ensuring progress in the general education curriculum safeguards them against second-class treatment and against being patronized because of their disability (Thurlow, 2000).
Testing Accommodations • Dictated Responses • Extended Time • Large Print • Braille • Interpretation for Instructions
Inclusion • At your table, brainstorm a slogan for inclusion that could be printed on a bumper sticker. It should be catchy, pithy, and make a point. A design or logo can be included, if you wish.
