Origins of War Origins of War Ho Chi Minh • Vietnam is pre-WWII a French Colony • Richest French colony due to natural resources • Ho Chi Minh • Communist leader fought against Japanese during WWII • Japanese Surrender, Ho Chi Minh declares independence of Vietnam . • Now fight the French, win independence in 1954

  4. Geneva Accords (Geneva, Switzerland) • U.S., France, Great Britain, Soviet Union, China, and Vietnam • Meet to work out peace agreement • Conclude Vietnam would be divided temporarily • Ho Chi Minh control North • South Vietnam supported by the U.S.

Ngo Dinh Diem • Cracks down on communist in South Vietnam • Takes away rights; i.e. religion • Vietcong • Militia fighters who want communist government • American role grows fear of “domino theory” • Vietnam becomes communist so does the rest of South Asia • Eisenhower sends money • Kennedy sends troops as advisors • South Vietnamese overthrow Diem

  8. U.S. Enters War • Operation Rolling Thunder • Bombing campaign • Ho Chi Minh Trail • How N.V. moved troops and supplies • American planes dropped more bombs on N.V. than they dropped on Germany, Italy, and Japan during WWII
