Origins of War Origins of War Ho Chi Minh • Vietnam is pre-WWII a French Colony • Richest French colony due to natural resources • Ho Chi Minh • Communist leader fought against Japanese during WWII • Japanese Surrender, Ho Chi Minh declares independence of Vietnam . • Now fight the French, win independence in 1954

  4. Geneva Accords (Geneva, Switzerland) • U.S., France, Great Britain, Soviet Union, China, and Vietnam • Meet to work out peace agreement • Conclude Vietnam would be divided temporarily • Ho Chi Minh control North • South Vietnam supported by the U.S.
