Why is business important? Bus-iness [biz-nis] noun • an occupation, profession, or trade • the purchase and sale of goods in an attempt to make a profit • a person, partnership, or corporation engaged in commerce, manufacturing, or a service; profit-seeking enterprise America would not survive without: • Jobs • Goods and services
What is Corporate Social Responsibility? • Corporate social responsibility is the concern businesses have for the welfare of society, not just for their owners (Nickels, 2009, page 98). • Companies with good ethical reputations attract and retain better employees, draw more customers, and enjoy greater employee loyalty (Nickels, 2009, page 99).
What are the characteristics of an effective leader? • Be humble • Ruthlessly improve • Invest in the business • Be an aggressive “evolutionizer” • Have a sense of humor (Zhivago, 2010)
How to be humble: • Lead to serve • Appreciate your talents • Recognize your own faults • Understand your limitations
How to ruthlessly improve: Leaders are constantly finding new ways to educate their customers, employees, and partners. They are always looking at their processes, policies, and systems, and asking themselves: “How could we make this more efficient? What don’t we need anymore? What do we need now?” (Zhivago, 2010)
How to invest in your business: Even in a terrible economy, a good leader will invest in the business. He will just choose his investments wisely (Zhivago, 2010).
How to be an aggressive “evolutionizer”: The effective leader becomes a valued and trusted business partner for his customers, opening the door for him to introduce new products and services to them (Zhivago, 2010)
How to have a sense of humor: Running a company is serious business, but if you can’t laugh once in a while, you’re not going to be an effective leader (Zhivago, 2010).
