Prayerwalking: Interceding in and for the Community GAC June 2014
Not a prayer of hypocrites And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward (Mat. 6:5)
Seeking God for the city • But seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the LORD on its behalf, for in its welfare you will find your welfare (Jer. 29:7)
Seeking God for the city • First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, 2for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way. 3 This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, 4 who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth … (1 Tim 2:1-4)
Praying everywhere and for boldness • I desire then that in every place the men should pray, lifting holy hands without anger or quarreling (1 Tim 2:8) • Praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints, 19 and also for me, that words may be given to me in opening my mouth boldly to proclaim the mystery of the gospel, 20 for which I am an ambassador in chains, that I may declare it boldly, as I ought to speak. (Eph. 6:18-20)
Pray that the Word of the Lord may speed • Finally, brothers, pray for us, that the word of the Lord may speed ahead and be honored, as happened among you, 2 and that we may be delivered from wicked and evil men. For not all have faith (2 Thes 3:1-2).
Seeing the community through the lens of God • But when I thought how to understand this, it seemed to me a wearisome task, 17until I went into the sanctuary of God; then I discerned their end (Ps. 73:16-17). • In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God (2 Cor. 4:4)
Seeing the community through the lens of God • For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him (Joh. 3:16). • Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven (Mat. 6:10)
How do we walk? • Small groups, walking through the neighborhood, looking at it through the eyes of God, desiring all in that community to come to Him. • Praying for each house, people and all that the Spirit of God will bring to our attention; prayers are silent prayers (not loud). We do not want to draw attention to our self
How will we pray? • Pray for the saved but uncommitted, who have become apathetic or complacent. • Ask God to convict them of sin, righteousness, and judgment. (See John 16:8) • Pray they will become obedient to assemble. (See Hebrews 10:25) • Pray they will overcome a bad church experience. • Source: SBC
How will we pray? • Ask God to remove the blindness from their minds (See 2 Corinthians 4:4-5) • Ask God to bring light into the darkness they are experiencing (See Ephesians 5:8) • Ask God to deliver them from the spirit of disobedience (See Ephesians 2:1-2) • Ask God to reach through their hardened minds. (See 2 Corinthians 3:14) • Ask God to set the captives free (See 2 Timothy 2:26)
Preparation • Prepare yourself for the walk, both physically and spiritually • Think about a good walking shoe; cloth etc. • Confession of sins, read Scriptures that prepare you to love your neighbor and seek their salvation • Pray for the community the coming days; ask God to open our eyes, see and hear things He want us to pray for
