  1. JSPS Multilateral Core University Programme 2001-2010 COASTAL MARINE SCIENCES Philippine Summary Report2001-2008 M. D. Fortes Marine Science Institute CSUP fortesm@upmsi.ph

  2. Vision …for the JSPS-Philippine MCU Programme A lasting Japan-Philippine collaboration instituted to understand tropical marine ecosystems & utilize the knowledge & skills in ordertoimprove capacity to conserve biodiversity, protect the environment & sustainably use Philippine marine resources. It is founded on mutual respect & achieved through sharing of knowledge & expertise

  3. CMS Philippines: Composition • University of the Philippines • Division of Biol. Sciences (UPV) [3] • Institute of Biol. Sciences (UPLB) [1]* • Marine Science Institute CS (UPD) [7] • De la Salle University (DLSU) [1] • Mindanao State University (Naawan) [1] • SEA Fish. Dev’t Council (SEAFDEC) [2] • University of San Carlos (USC) [1] 5 major institutions, ……..with 15 researchers * Dr. Lourdes Castillo passed away last April 2008

  5. PRODUCTS & SERVICES Greater emphasis on peer-reviewed int’l journal publications & papers in symposia, workshops, etc. Generally declined in number during the first 6 years. From 13 of 16 participants (5 of 10 member institutions) …significant increase in ISI-indexed journal publications at present!

  6. Other major activities • As participant • JSPS National Coordinators’ Meeting: 2001-2008 • Project workshops: 2001-2008 • Oceanographic cruises (3 in 2008) • As participant & host • NaGISA/JSPS-DOST Taxonomy Workshop – August 2007 • Joint NCMS-DOST/JSPS-PNSC Biodiversity Workshop – Dec 2007 ( ) • UNEP/GEF SCS Project-DOST-JSPS Echo-Training Seminars (Biodiversity) • As participant in new research, assessment & monitoring, capacity dev’t • SeagrassNet (Phase 3) 2008-2009 • PERSEUS (Coal spill assessment & monitoring): 2008-2013 • JST-JICA Bilateral Capacity Building Initiative & Networking: 2008-2013 • Maintenance & enhancement of Herbarium Marinum: • 53,000+ collections ca 2000 species (96% seaweeds, 4% seagrasses • New records (species?) of seagrasses • Marine biodiversity promotion in media (Local & Japanese TV • channels (NHK & DAI Enterprises), BBC

  7. FUTURE DIRECTION: …& how we can sustain the benefits FOCUSED RESEARCH NEW CONCEPTS, THEORIES, METHODOLOGIES RESULTS INTEGRATION DECISION SUPPORT SYSTEM RESULTS UTILIZATION

  8. FOCUSED RESEARCH • Good examples: • On seagrasses of the Philippines & East Asia [ ] • (coral reefs the most popular, mangroves the most destroyed, seagrasses the least studied) • Some existing & relevant studies initiated in 2007-2008 (till 2013) • Linking seagrass functions to climate change mitigation [ ] • Ecosystem connectivity as a basis for an IDSS [ ]

  9. Seagrass Distribution In the Philippines (1983-2008) …the western margins alone yield about 27,282 sq. km of seagrass beds …globally, covers 600,000 sq. km of intercontinental shelf, accounts for 12% of total marine C02 uptake
