STATEMENT TO STORY • Claim: “We have a fantastic team.” • Better: “We weathered a rough storm during 2008.” • Story: “ It was during the mortgage and housing fiasco in 2008 when Sally, one of our newest team members, said, ‘This is a big mess and we’d better work on some morale training here.’ Wow, it was painfully obvious when she said it, but the deluge of news on CNN, MSNBC, Fox had clouded our seeing it. We all seemed like deer in headlights yet, once she said it, we immediately agreed, “You’re absolutely right!” We spent the next month taking time to speak to each of the 12 team members, listening to their stories, to find out how the news and press was impacting them and their work and boy did we learn a lot! We then put together a town meeting twice a month for several months as the team shared real concerns, gained empathy as well as support and generated real solutions to weather the storm. Net net? YELLOW SURFER • I took this photo this summer at the Quicksilver Worldwide Surfing contest in Long Beach, New York the summer of 2011. • As former photojournalist, you can imagine and you'd be right that I took a lot of pictures. And what I noticed was that each contestant looked different, handled the waves differently and approached each challenge in different ways. • What impressed me, while watching the best competitors in the world -each in a different primary colored wet suit, vie for a million dollar purse, with $300,000 going to the winner - was witnessing their talent, moves and their ability to handle unpredictability each day based on what they had to deal with : the waves, weather and wind conditions. • While talent made the ultimate difference as to who might win, the remarkable part was that each contestant believed in himself. Each swam into the sea, did his best, and yes, while possibly keeping first place in mind they were also trying to be better than they were in the prior competition. • What really struck me was that the only way each could do his best was to pay attention to each and every MOMENT. I imagined the "oh dear" questions they might be asking, in anticipation as they scanned the ocean, with eagerness and anxiety for each heet was time limited. Each had to find just the right wave for the competition. You see, since each competition event was timed, each surfer had to take the best Nature offered. Each could wish he wanted for a perfect wave, but had to deal with what the ocean had in mind. Each surfer had to make a decision to take the best of the offerings and do their best to stay in the game. • I hunched that they were saying to themselves, "Where's the next killer wave? Am I prepared? What will I have to do? Can I make the right decision on the wave I will take? Can I get the right angle? Can I overcome my fears?" • Then when they found one, the one that they hoped would be the winning ride, I could almost hear them think, "Yes, this is it and I know I can do it! Yes, I can be in the moment and keep my head clear. Yes, I am riding the wave and, regardless, I can always find the best angle to keep my balance.“ • What are your waves going to look like this year? • So, my dear friends, I wish for each of you the ability to find your balance in 2012 as the waves of living, economic challenges, ups and downs, ebb and flow in the life that awaits you all year long.
