Harnessing the Power of Social Media Iowa Trails Summit June 13, 2014 Tracey BrambleInformation Specialist
What is social media (SM)? • Social Media simply refers to interaction among people in which they create, share, and/or exchange information and ideas in virtual communities and networks.
Why would you want to use SM? • To start a conversation. Unlike a website, you don’t just share your point of view, you engage with others. • What messages work on social media? • Information to help people to what they want to do, whether they know it yet or not- introduce new ideas. • Post stuff that lets people into your world. Share what interests you and you’ll attract like-minded people.
Internet use in Iowa • How many people have Internet at home? • 77.5 percent of Iowa households have Internet access (worldnetstats.com) • According to Nielsen, Internet users continue to spend more time with social media sites than any other type of site.
Facebook • 30 percent of Iowa’s internet users are on Facebook (InternetWorldStats.com) • Fourth quarter 2013, 1.2 BILLION monthly users (worldwide). • Allows you to share text, photos, infographics, and videos
Facebook – what can we learn • Data drives what we do. From Facebook, we can find out what people are seeing and sharing.
Twitter • Internationally, in the fourth quarter 2013, Twitter had 241 MILLION monthly users. • Twitter is the Iowa DOT’s fastest growing social media channel, with a combined follower count of more than 25,000. • The platform limits tweets to 140 characters, allowing short bursts of information several times per day. • Information posted to Twitter can coordinate with information posted to Facebook, including photos and infographics to increase reach.
YouTube • Videos can be housed on a YouTube channel and then linked both to social media posts and to websites. • Something you may not know: • Utilizing YouTube allows you to cost-effectively caption videos, making them accessible for people with disabilities.
Pinterest • This platform allows you to create pin boards to tell stories in a more visual way. • The Iowa DOT uses if for topics including safety, history, transportation-inspired crafts, wacky facts, and images.
Flickr • This platform is used to give the public and news media easy access to photos from major events. • Several of the galleries from the Iowa DOT’s Flickr site are linked directly from pages on the Iowa DOT’s website.
Yammer It can be your internal SM • Very similar to Facebook in the way it operates, but is more controlled in its reach. • Your organization can have its own network – you set the parameters as to who can join. • Just like any other site, you create an account. • Once you’re on Yammer, create or join groups with similar interests.
Blog – it isn’t a four letter word • Iowa DOT has been “blogging” for years, we just called it something different so people wouldn’t freak out. • The website we have used to post news releases is the same site we used to launch the new blog “Transportation Matters for Iowa”. • Purpose of our blog is to increase transparency – within and outside of an organization. • The blog is another way to start a conversation about whatever topic you choose.
