Academics • Grades are available through gradespeed.kleinisd.net • E = Excellent work (above expected level) • S = Satisfactory (At expected level) • N = Needs Improvement • U = Unacceptable • Some assignments are graded, some are not. Work that is not graded will have a or a check mark. • Computer assignments can be accessed from home on learning.com
Report Cards and Progress Reports • Report cards and Kindergarten checklist - are issued every 9 weeks • Mandatory 6 grades taken per semester, per subject • Kindergarten check list - included in the report card. It will give a better understanding of their academic skills. • Kindergarten does not issue progress reports.
Textbooks/Curriculum • Follow TEKS and standardized Klein curriculum • Plan as a Kindergarten team • Use many web-based and software-based learning tools
Language Arts • Handwriting: Manuscript • Weekly letter focus: Two letters per week • Sight words: Word banks and word wall. • Vocabulary: Academic vocabulary book • Rhyming • Counting syllables • Concepts of print: words / letters, punctuation, capital and lower case, top to bottom, left to right, where to begin reading.
Writing • Inventive spelling is used. (Ex: rainbow =rnbo) • Writing on the sounds heard in the words. In the beginning, typically the first and last sounds heard. • It’s going to look a little messy at first.

Testing • Our goal is for your child to be READING simple books by the end of kindergarten • DRA reading testing will be given three times throughout the year. • October • January • April
Attendance • Each day your child is here on time, they get a sticker for their chart. • Send notes for EVERY absence • 15 or more unexcused absences can result in retention • Tardies will bring conduct down • Early pick-up – must get office to sign out • For transportation changes - give notice to teacher AND office.
Absences • Call the office by 9:45 • Send written note on the first day back. • See student handbook for number of unexcused absences allowed.
Transportation • Please send a written note OR call the office and notify of any changes. • Your child must have a written note to go home a different way.
General Rules • Clothing must be in dress code. • Girls – no spaghetti straps • Please have girls wear shorts under their dress • Medications go to nurse, not teacher. • Volunteers are needed for home room parents. Sign up at office. • Please don’t let your child bring toys or jewelry.
Help at Home • Read to your child and have your child read to you – This is the GREATEST PREDICTOR of success for children • PLEASE Practice: • TYING SHOES • Writing name • Letters and sounds • Sight words • Check backpacks every day and be sure to empty folders from the previous day
Snack • Please send a snack each day. • Re-sealable baggies can be sent back home. • Things that do not seal must be thrown away if your child does not finish. • Please do not send drinks. • Food sharing is not allowed.
Discipline • Behavior chart • Blue: Awesome = E • Dark Green: Super = E • Light Green: Good Job = S • Yellow: Oops! = S • Orange: Warning = N • Red: Time Out = N • Purple: Note Home = U • Positive reinforcement whenever possible • Social skills and responsibility • Behavior goes home weekly in Tues. folder • Team points
Homework • 1 page each night: letter practice over letters taught the previous week • No more than 4 pages a week • Homework folders are red and should be returned on Friday. • Homework will be sent home Monday.
Homework Grading • All 4 pages completed on FRIDAY: E • 3 pages complete: S • 2 Pages complete: N • No pages complete: U • If all pages are complete, but work is turned in late, it is still a U.
Tuesday Folders • Please remove everything from the yellow Tuesday folder and return any school forms. • Sign the bottom of the paper stapled in the folder and return Wednesday.
STAR Student • Every child will be the star student one week! • We will start in October in alpha order. • Star student poster – Monday • Star student show and tell - Wednesday • Star student parent reading at 10:35 - Friday • Treasure chest - Friday
Benfer Spirit Day • Every FRIDAY is spirit day! • School shirts may be purchased in the school store.
PTO • Please join the PTO • Cost is $10 per child • PTO purchases items for our school • Books • Laptop cart • Playground equipment • Books
