  1. Energy Sources Petroleum and solar energy By : Timothy Brinson Caison Kirkland

  2. Solar Energy (Sun) Pros • Doesn’t produce pollution. • Renewable because it comes from the sun. • The earth receives more than enough solar energy to provide all of our needs. • Wouldn’t damage wildlife. • Decreases the electrical bill. • Some places don’t have enough sunny days for enough solar energy. • Solar cells and collectors are really expensive. • The collectors can cost up to 1/3 of a house. • They can take a long time to install. • We don’t yet have all the technology to absorb all of the solar power. Cons

  3. How this energy form is used in present day Solar • It can be used to power lights. • Can be used to heat up water with solar water heater. • Can be used to generate electrical energy. • Can be used to work calculators. • Used to heat buildings

  4. Important Details When solar energy hits a solar cell, the electrons contained in the solar cell material absorb this solar energy, which transforms the electrons into conduction electrons. If the energy is great enough then the electrons are able to become free and carry an electric charge through a circuit to the destination. Solar energy is renewable because the earth gets continuous solar energy. Solar energy has been used since 1954 when the first solar cell or collector made by bell labs.

  5. Petroleum Pros • Helps humans get around town. • Gives us fuel. • More then 40% of the worlds energy comes from petroleum products. • No new technology needed to use. • Relatively inexpensive • Producing ,transporting ,and using petroleum can cause environmental problems. • Can cause acid rain. • Can endanger wildlife. • can pollute the air. • Petroleum transportation by ships can lead to oil spills Cons

  6. How is this energy used in present day petroleum • Petroleum is used to make credit cards. • Be used to make tranquilizer darts. • Can be used to make artificial limbs. • Used in kerosene. • Used to make American flags.

  7. Important Details Petroleum can be used to create energy by heat. It has to be put in a furnace. Petroleum is a nonrenewable resource because it took a quarter billion years to make it. Petroleum began in 3,000 b.c.
