  2. Early people of Japan: • Jomon Period: Hunter gatherers & fishers • Yayoi Period (100 AD): agricultural • Yamato Period: (500 AD) Uji: powerful clans that ruled Japan

  3. Religion: SHINTO: - The belief that everything has a spirit called “kami” - Emphasized nature, stressed purification, and celebrated life

  4. Religion BUDDHISM: - Didn’t replace Shinto but blended with it - Emphasized showing respect, acting rightly, and achieving wisdom through meditation

  5. Prince Shotoku • From the Soga Uji, became regent in 593 AD • Encouraged Buddhism & the spread of Chinese culture

  6. Taika Reforms • After the death of Prince Shotoku the government passed these reforms. • Government claimed ownership of all farmland, assigning a clan leader to oversee their territory. • Limited the power of clan leaders • Didn’t affect the peasants much

  7. Heian Period • The capital city was moved from Nara to Kyoto • Buddhism was limited by the emperor • Clan leaders of provinces began taking power away from the emperor - The Fujiwara became the most powerful of these families by influencing the emperor

  8. Life in Court (Courtiers) “dwellers among the clouds” • Only 5% of the population, but they created Japanese Culture • Refined & Luxurious • Silk kimonos • White faces • Blackened teeth • Painted on eyebrows • Educated (Loved poetry & kept diaries)

  9. Life in the Provinces • Provinces supported the court through taxes • Nobles began taking their land back from the government while they were hanging out in court ignoring what was going on • Some became tenant farmers, managing small estates • Most were still peasants doing all the work on the land
