Study Questions for Quiz 5 The exam has four parts: 1. (32 points) Truth Tables 2. (48 points) Truth Trees 3. (10 points) Review of Highly Recommended Derived Rules 4. (20 points) Proof Using any Rules 1. Truth tables (32 points) There will be 2 arguments to check with truth tables. One will require a table of 4 rows, the other will need 8. The guide columns will be given on the exam. You will be asked to do the table and then say whether the argument is valid or invalid.
Study Questions for Quiz 5 2. (48 points) Trees. There will be 2 arguments to check with trees. You will be asked to given counterexamples for any invalid argument. Sample: (C&-B)>A | C>(AvB) (C&-B)>A -(C>(AvB)) C -(AvB) -A -B -(C&-B) A * -C --B * * VALID
Study Questions for Quiz 5 3. (10 points) Review of Derived Rules I will ask you to identify recommended derived rules. I might ask you to name rules and construct the results of applying them to such sentences as: -(A>B), -(A&B), -(AvB), -A>-B, and AvB. I might also construct multiple choice questions asking you to distinguish cases where the rules are applied correctly from those that are not. See the self tests for Chapter 9 for examples.
Study Questions for Quiz 5 4. (20 points) Proofs Using Any Rules Here is a sample: (C>A)v(C>B) | C>(AvB) Answer: 1 1) (C>A)v(C>B) A 2 2) C PA 3 3) C>A PA 2,3 4) A 3,2 >O 2,3 5) AvB 4 vI 2 6) (C>A)>(AvB) 3-5 >I 7 7) C>B PA 2,7 8) B 7,2 >O 2,7 9) AvB 8 vI 2 10) (C>B)>(AvB) 7-9 >I 1,2 11) AvB 1,6,10 vO 1 11) C>(AvB) 2-11 >I
