  3. Poetry • no set definition • often divided into lines and stanzas • uses regular rhythmical patterns (meter)

Types of Poetry • Lyric – short, highly musical poem that expresses observations and feelings of a single speaker (song) • Narrative – story told in verse; contains elements of short stories (tells a story) • Haiku – a 17-syllable, delicate, unrhymed Japanese verse, usually about nature • Limerick – a 5-lined, rhymed, rhythmical verse, usually humorous

  5. More Types of Poetry • Ballad – a songlike narrative poem, usually featuring rhyme, rhythm, and refrain • Free verse – poetry with neither regular meter nor rhyme scheme • Dramatic – characters speak in own voices • Epic – poet tells a long, involved tale about gods or heroes

  8. Types of Fiction • Novel – long work of fiction • Short story – brief work of fiction; usually follows a plot diagram • Realistic Fiction – actual events did not take place, but story and characters are believable

  9. More Fiction • Historical Fiction – story is based on true historical events/people; contains fictional characters and events • Contemporary Fiction – set in present day; story and characters are believable

Just a little more fiction • Science Fiction – combines elements of fiction and fantasy with scientific fact • Fantasy – highly imaginative, elements not found in real life (i.e. fairy tales) • Folklore – myths,tales, legends, fables – based on fiction or fact, often passed down by word of mouth

  11. Nonfiction • True! • Ideas, information, stories about real people, places, objects, or events

  12. Types of Nonfiction • Biography – writer tells life story of another person • Autobiography – writer tells story of his or her own life • Letters

  13. More Nonfiction • Essays – short work about a particular subject; types: narrative, expository, persuasive, reflective, descriptive • Reports • Speeches • Technical Writing
