Functions of managers Fayol identified five key functions of management: • Planning – considering future plans and targets • Organising – organising human and physical resources to meet set targets and goals • Commanding – instructing and directing workers • Co-ordinating – drawing together people and departments to meet goals • Controlling – monitoring operations and actions to ensure they are in line with plans, targets and policies
Functions of managers In addition to these, managers may also be involved in: • Reporting • Budgeting
Skills of managers Managers may have a range of transferable skills such as: • Communication • Organisation • Interpersonal In addition to the above, management skills related specifically to a job or industry may be required. These are called technical skills.
Management styles Managers may adopt a number of leadership styles depending on preference and the given situation: • Autocratic More control • Paternalistic • Democratic • Participative • Laissez-faire Less control
