Today’s Targets • Participants will: • Identify criteria for quality learning targets • Deconstruct one standard working in a group at their grade level • Analyze models of assessment • Critique characteristics of effective teacher leaders • Determine the intent of engineering within NGSS
Pillars of Network Meetings Network Foundations…. Pillars again Highly Effective Teaching and learning Kentucky’s Core Academic Standards Assessment Literacy Leadership TPGES –Teacher Professional Growth and Effectiveness System
CASL Activity • Each table takes a sheet of chart paper, make 3 columns; label the first “Brainstorm” • At your table, brainstorm what criteria makes a good learning target; list in the column • Read the CASL #3 sheet and discuss • Label 2nd column CASL and use that column to revise your first list based on the reading • Now, discuss whether NGSS requires anything more; what is unique about NGSS that must be considered as you create learning targets? Label 3rd column NGSS and once again revise your list • Gallery walk
Homework Evaluation • Get out the targets you were assigned at the November meeting • Evaluate those against your identified criteria, the CASL #3 and the rubric • Table talk about how those targets rate

Supporting Student Self-Reflection and Responsibility How can I align my curriculum, instruction & assessment with clear learning intentions to enable students to take ownership of their own learning?
Which prerequisites did you need to work on? How have you progressed since November?
At our last meeting in November you received several sample student self-assessment forms. --How have you used one of these forms or adapted one to make your own? --If you have not used a student self-assessment form yet, discuss how you might use one in your current or an upcoming unit. Sample from November Self Assessment form (review)
In November you reviewed 6 formative assessment scenarios. Which of these ideas have you been able to use in your classroom? Which do you still plan to use. Scenarios from November Scenarios from November – Formative Assessment as Tests and Quizzes: 1- The Pretest (based on learning targets) 2- The Review (tide, gain, bold, cheer) 3- Goal Setting (after the test) 4- The Final before the Final (pretest, early final, project) 5- Multiple Quizzes (4 ungraded quizzes, scaffold to build up to unit test) 6- Monday Quizzes (group students as Don’t Understand, Unclear if Understand, or Clearly Understand, for weekly lessons/activities)
CASL FOUNDATION FOUNDATION GOAL GOAL Enablers Enablers GOAL GOAL
Divide up Scenarios 7-12 at your table. As you read your assigned scenario(s), make note of where you see evidence of any of the Seven Strategies of Assessment for Learning and be ready to share with your table group. Today’s Scenarios – Formative Assessment During Class, as Homework and as processes in traditional grading systems: 7 – Homework that Varies 8 – Homework as Optional 9 – Homework as Qualifying 10 – Personal Communication (Ready, Set, Show, Exit slips, Plus/Delta/Next, 4 Corners) 11 – Requiring Proficiency 12 – Student Involved Grading
Think about a performance expectation you deconstructed this morning… --for what purpose and --what audience might you assess?
How will we evaluate, who will evaluate and how will we communicate results?
