TITLE The influence of course selection on the academic achievement among the first and second year Faculty of Health Sciences students.
CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION
INTRODUCTION • 40,506 of applicants had been offered places at public universities.[Public Higher Learning Institutions (IPTA) intake statistic 2010]. • In 2011, the qualified applicants were 41,267 (increased of 1.9% compared to 2010). http://poobalan.com/blog/borninmalaysia/2011/07/21/201 1-ipta-intake-statistics/ http://poobalan.com/blog/borninmalaysia/2010/06/17/ statistics-for-ipta-2010-intake/
In Malaysia, a student need: * UPU= Unit PusatUniversiti
The selection is based on the qualification of students and other factors(90% academic & 10% co-curriculum) • Choosing a right course is an important process in a student's life before entering the university as the decision made will affect his or her future life.
Despite the students are allocated with the course that they are interested or vice versa, there are some impacts on their academic achievements.
Several authors have proposed that interests influence academic achievement and learning in school. (Krapp, 1998a, 1998b, 1999; Schiefele, Krapp, & Winteler, 1992). • Academic interests are often assumed to be important domain-specific intrinsic motivational determinants of academic achievement (Koller and Baumert, 2001).
To the best of our information, there are limited studies on relationship of course selection and academic achievement among university students in Malaysia.
JUSTIFICATION • This study is expected to improve the academic achievement of undergraduates first year and second year Faculty of Health Sciences students. By understanding the influence of course selection on the academic achievement, we can plan the strategies to improve the results of undergraduates regarding to the course selection.
Besides that, improvement in academic achievement among undergraduates first year and second year Faculty of Health Sciences students will increase the reputation of our university as well. The reputation of the university is representing the educational system and reputation of our country.
Our research is important because academic achievement will directly affect the unemployment rate. According to Principal Statistics of Labor Force, Malaysia, January 2012, though the rate has declined to 3.0% but it is still very high as compared to other countries such as Singapore and Thailand. Through this research, we can know the underlying factors that influence academic achievement of first year and second year Faculty of Health Sciences students, thus help to overcome unemployment issue.
Furthermore, our research is useful as a guideline for students when choosing courses in the University Centre Unit (UPU, Unit PusatUniversiti). From this research, we can have opinions from undergraduates first year and second year Faculty of Health Sciences regarding course selection. There are several aspects that student can take into considerations such as interest, ability and cost of a course. This will help students to be more clear and cautious when choosing the course.
In general, this research study will contribute some important information to National University of Malaysia as well as the students. In future, this study can also be extended to UKM Bangi and other local universities. Application for higher education In Malaysia, after the students finished their SijilPelajaran Malaysia(SPM) that is Form 5, there are 2 ways for them to choose if they want to enter local universities. First is matriculation and the other would be SijilTinggiPelajaran Malaysia(STPM) which is also known as Form 6. Students in England continue their studies in higher education after their secondary education which is compulsory for all children from age 11 to 18. The difference of application of higher education in Malaysia and England is that students in Malaysia are required to choose 8 courses of their choice with the university included whereas in England, students choose a college of their choice before choosing the course they want.

CHAPTER 3 METHODOLOGY
METHODOLOGY • The study design: Cross-sectional • Population of study: The first and second year students of Faculty of Health Sciences (FSK) session 2011/2012.
Study location: campus Kuala Lumpur, UniversitiKebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) • Subjects selection: Random sampling • Duration of study: It will be conducted on April until May.
Sample size of the study: 484 students.significance level of 5% and degree of accuracy is 5%. We calculate the sample size using this formula: N= saizsampel X²= value of chi-square P= proportion for the population
n = 3.84 (484) 0.5 (1-0.5) 0.05² (484-1)+ 3.84(0.5) (1-0.5) = 464.64/2.1675 = 214 subjects
Inclusion factor: first and second year students of FSK • Exclusion factor: • Third year and forth year students FSK • All students of Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Pharmacies and Faculty of Dentistry
Method that used: Questionnaire • SECTION A: Demographic information • SECTION B : Student’s education background • SECTION C : Factors affecting the academic achievement • SECTION D : Factors affecting the selection of courses. • SECTION E : Association of course selection and academic achievement.
Analysis data: using SPSS versi 19.0 1. Descriptive Test – mean and standard deviation of CGPA. 2. Chi-square test – • The factors affecting the academic achievement of the first and second year FSK students. (between type of activity, duration and frequency) 3. Correlation- association between interest in course selection and academic achievement.
