  1. Poetry Project • Poetry project will consist of five parts.

  2. Part one of Poetry Project DUE TUESDAY 1/14 • Topic will emulate “My Papa’s Waltz” by Roethkel. • Write a poem about mom, dad or both. Ideas could be about a memory, relationship, past, present, or future. • Form: • Traditional – stanzas, pattern, correct punctuation and grammar. 3) Choose tone – word choice has to support tone expressed. • Examples: sarcastic, loving, playful, regretful, bitter…. 4) Choose symbol to include in poem – • Example: waltz was a symbol for father/son relationship 5) Poem must include the following: • Figurative language: • Include one of the following: simile, metaphor, hyperbole, personification • Sound devices: • Include one of the following: alliteration, assonance, consanance • Imagery – five senses 6) Identify the theme of the poem.

  3. Part two – Extended Metaphor • Form - organic • Extended metaphor must be ORIGINAL. Please stay away from overused such as school is a jail, life is a beach, love is a flower… • Must include images of nature that suggest feelings and lead to theme. • Ex. Wind of the night - loneliness • Must include repetition, sound devices not used in first poem. • FOCUS on diction and sentence variety. • Word choice must play off of metaphor. • Adverb first, Prepositional phrase first, declarative, interrogative • Minimum eight lines

Part three – SONNET EXAMPLAR • Choose a group of 3 • Choose metaphor to emulate poem • “Shall I compare thee to a___________________?” • Diction, figurative language has to be focused on the metaphor and comparison. • Follow rhyme scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEF GG. • Follow shift in line 9 • Conclude with a couplet and repetition • Choose tone: sarcastic, playful, mean, mournful, deceitful, loving, clingy, funny, disappointed

Part four – Research/Analysis • Choose a poet from the list below • Research the poet’s historical and cultural background • Choose a poem of that poem that speaks to you (Print and twist) • Using information from your TWIST write an essay analyzing the poem. Write a minimum 3 paragraph essay that includes what is unique about the topic, the theme and form. • Use TEXTUAL EVIDENCE – include quotes from poem • Add information about the poet into the essay to show author’s purpose and influence.   6. Part five - Lyrics • Annotate, identify and explain: • Figurative language • Sound devices • Tone • Symbolism • Rhyme scheme • Imagery • Explain how any of the above lead to the theme and meaning of the song.
