Audacity: Open Source audio software A Production of the Ricky J. Sirois Estate
So it does what?, or, Hey, that last slide was just a website picture! • Audacity is: • Open source… • Sound editing/recording software • Create/export/convert audio files (non-propietary) • Improve sound quality • Create audio effects • Make mash-ups • The obligatory…and so much more!
Can I use it in a Music Library? Of course you can! Only musicians would understand half of the software anyway! And yes, this is the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, not a library.
Musicians could take full advantage of… • The ability to record multi-track audio • Fading and volume balancing effects • The ability to add in your own new effects (via programming) • Lots of other things I don’t quite understand!
Shucks, I’m no musician… But with our new limited-time Audacity bonus pack, YOU DON”T HAVE TO BE!
Enjoy the proletariat atmosphere of the public library? Staff can use Audacity to… Patrons can use Audacity to… • Make audio tours and walkthroughs • Digitize audio recordings • Make Podcasts • Have fun in children’s • Make ringtones • Take notes over searches • Convert downloaded audio files • Transfer tapes/records to modern formats
The Good, The Bad: The Slide GOOD BAD • Free • Customizable • Small • Supports many formats • Abundant features • Highly technical • Missing some useful controls* • Will not support proprietary audio files
Let’s get down to brass tacks… Ardour Jokosher Kristal Qtractor Rosegarden Traverso …and that’s just the free software
So…do I want it in my library? In the end, unless I’m running a music library, this is purely a luxury item – there aren’t enough legitimate uses to make it worth the time to learn.
