2. About Creative Speech In the Creative Speech course you will create, memorize, and practice a 3-5 minute speech that you will perform in front of your classmates at the Saint Mary Speech Contest on July 17, 2009. The winners of the Saint Mary speech contest will be invited to compete at the Nunoike speech contest on July 25, 2009, where you will compete against other students from the Aichi area.

3. Course Outline • Weeks 1: Watch a presentation about writing your speeches, discuss types of speeches, and brainstorm speech topics • Weeks 2-4: Choose a topic, brainstorm ideas, make an outline, and begin writing your speeches • Weeks 5-8: Write andrevise speeches, do peer review on your speeches, send speech copies to Wendy for editing, and start practicing the speech • Weeks 9-12: learn techniques for presenting your speech, practice reciting speeches and work on memorization

5. Choosing a Topic Just about any topic is fine as long as you have something interesting to say about it. Don’t just tell a story about something, tell why the topic is important, what you learned about it, or how it can help us.

21. Getting Started • Decide which details are the most important • Decide the order you want to talk about the details • Use the ideas from your mind map to make an outline for your speech

Writing Your Speech • Write the body of your speech Take the ideas from your brainstorming and outline and put them into paragraphs • Write the conclusion of your speech Summarize the main ideas of the speech and end with an anecdote or opinion if you want to. • Write the introduction of your speech Write a catchy topic sentence to get the listeners’ interest then introduce the main ideas (if you are writing a persuasion or opinion speech you should also give your opinion or position on the topic)

23. Getting Your Speech Ready • Revise and edit your speech.In your groups read each others speeches and give advice. What do you like or dislike about the speeches? What do you think should be added or deleted from the speeches? • Type your speech and revise it again. Email your speech to Wendy to read and give you advice. Then rewrite your speech as many times as you need to make it as good as it can be.

24. Getting Ready for the Speech Contest • Start memorizing your speech Set goals for yourself about how much you need to memorize each week. • Practice reciting your speech Say your speech in front of your friends, family members, or teachers and ask them for advice. It is also a good idea to practice in front of a mirror so you can see your gestures and expressions.
