GMES atmospheric environmental services • A component of Europe’s Global Monitoring • for Environment and Security initiative • which also provides services for land and ocean • will move from research to operational funding 2011-2014 • The atmospheric programme comprises • developing operational space-based observation of constituents • strengthening the provision of complementary in-situ observations • developing and operating associated data and information services • A 48-partner EC-funded project called MACC • provides pilot core monitoring services • will support downstream services for specific sectors • is coordinated by ECMWF
Range of GMES services • Atmosphere, ocean and land services each have some • climate-service components • A regulation for initial operational services (2011-2013) is going through European Parliament/Council procedures • Regulation includes provision for a climate-change monitoring service in addition to the atmosphere, ocean and land services • Climate service may • include the climate elements provided by the atmosphere, ocean and land services • include additional elements, among them global and regional reanalysis • Full operational range of services expected from 2014
GMES atmospheric environmental services Services related to the chemical and particulate content of the atmosphere Based on global and regional processing, adapting the data assimilation and forecasting approaches of numerical weather prediction Includes: Near-real-time global and regional production streams Delayed-mode global stream (~six months lag) Global reanalysis for past decade (with regional air-quality assessments)
