Genetic engineering through selective breeding • Ex. Dogs, Agricultural products- what else? • Selective breeding leads to inbreeding: mating between 2 closely related individuals
Selective breeding takes many generations • Genetic engineering is a faster way of increasing a specific gene in a population • A.K.A recombinant DNA technology
Recombinant DNA-recombining fragments of DNA from different sources • DNA from one organism inserted into the DNA of a second organism- known as transgenic
Transgenic organisms- contain genes from other species • Tobacco plant with firefly glow gene • Bacteria plasmids with human genes
1. Isolate DNA to be inserted • 2. Attach DNA to an insertion “vehicle” • 3. Transfer vehicle to host organism
Restriction Enzymes • Cut DNA AT SPECIFIC SITES • Different restriction enzymes cut at different places. • Example EcoR1
Use restriction enzyme to cut DNA • “Glue” sticky ends together with ligase
Extra circular DNA in bacteria • Move from bacteria to bacteria • Transformation • Transfer genetic information
Transgenic bacteria • Contain human genes • Express human proteins • Easy and cheap to grow • Many possibilities
