Deforestation in Rain Forest of Brazil Georgia Performance Standard SS6G2:a
Brazil; South America’s Largest Country • More than half of Brazil is covered by rain forest. • It is home to the largest variety of plants and animals on the planet. • “Lungs of the Earth”- the trees convert carbon dioxide into breathable oxygen.
Deforestation • Deforestation is the cutting down of entire forest. • In Brazil’s rain forest deforestation is due to slash and burn farming, road building, ranching, mining, logging, and new settlements.
Negative Effects: Loss of habitat Climate changes Soil dries out Interrupts the water cycle ( water is not returned to the atmosphere)
Government Interventions • Setting aside large tracts of land as protected areas • Replanting trees that have been cut
