Quality of care in paediatric neurosurgery in Scotland • Definitions of emergency care – relative term • Most emergency care is neurosurgically straightforward – paediatric team approach all important • For a single paediatric neurosurgical centre the majority will need to travel: • Benefit to a few • volume quality & upskilling for a relatively few complex neurosurgical procedures • Harm to a few • Where delay is critical • Or where local skills are so eroded as to be unsafe • But for asingle paediatric neurosurgical lead centre (in a MCN), some will need to travel and some will be looked after in other units • Benefit for small volume complex elective neurosurgical care • Maintain emergency care with rapid local access Thus: Where do we hang the donkey’s tail for the other units?
