Renewable Energy Statistics Program June 2010
NASS is seeking stakeholder input as it develops an ongoing program to collect and publish data about agriculture’s production and use of renewable energy.
Background • For the first time in FY 2010, Congress appropriated funding for NASS to collect annual data on energy-related topics
Background • 2008 – General questions included in Census of Agriculture • 2010 – On-Farm Renewable Energy Production Survey • 2011 and Beyond – We need your input!
On-Farm Renewable Energy Production Survey • NASS’s first-ever nationwide energy survey • Currently underway (through July 2010) • Results to be released February 2011
On-Farm Renewable Energy Production Survey • Follow-on to 2007 Census of Agriculture • Census respondents were asked: “At any time during 2007, did this operation generate energy or electricity on the farm using wind or solar technology, methane digester, etc?”
On-Farm Renewable Energy Production Survey • Limited focus: • Energy generated on-farm in 2009 via wind, solar, methane digestion • Sales to electric grid • Utility bill savings • Installation costs and funding
On-Farm Renewable Energy Production Survey • Screening questions about other types of renewable energy production: • Biodiesel • Ethanol • Geothermal • Hydroelectric • Mechanical (windmills, water wheels, etc)
On-Farm Renewable Energy Production Survey • Link to Questionnaire
2011 and Beyond • What’s Next for NASS Energy Program?
Annual Renewable Energy Survey • Annual survey beginning in 2012 • NASS soliciting public input on scope and content • Also consulting with other agencies and industry groups
Annual Renewable Energy Survey • Potential issues to explore: • Factors driving production and use • Obstacles • Production of energy crops • Costs and returns • On-farm liquid fuels production • Use of ethanol co-products • Leasing of wind rights
