OVERVIEW UMBC’s Library website is meant for on and off-campus use by UMBC students, faculty & staff only When it comes to items commonly found in the Library, you can do most of the leg-work from a computer with internet access, from anywhere. The three common items college students are in search of at the Library are books, DVDs and journal articles. UMBC’s Library Search Engine is capable of keeping you connected to not only UMBC’s inventory but the entire inventory of the University System of Maryland.

  3. FIGURE 1 FIGURE 2 MAKE SURE YOU LOG IN TO GET THE FULL BENEFITS go to http://umbc.edu/ click on Library and then Albin O. Khun Library on the drop down menu on the far right click on My Library Account from the list of University System of Maryland, click on UMBC sign in with the 14 digit number on top of the barcode of your UMBC RED ID and your last name NOTE: a new tab is created for each tab you click so at this point you should have a UMBC homepage tab, a Library homepage tab and a my account tab. FIGURE 5 FIGURE 6 FINDING A BOOK go back to the library homepage tab on the scroll down menu of the Books & More tab, choose either “title word/s” or “author word/s” in order to avoid getting the run around Note: it is best to find a book by searching for the author’s full name or using the full title of the book. once you find the book you are looking for, check to see if it is available online by clicking the yellow find it button or check to see it’s availability at the Maryland locations listed. If your book is not available at the UMBC library you can click on the yellow request button to have it delivered to UMBC. You will be notified by email once it arrives at UMBC. Note: you cannot request a book if you are not logged into your Library account If your book is available at UMBC and it is has not been checked out, write down the call number and have a Library employee help you locate it in the Library. FIGURE 8 FIGURE 9 FINDING A DVD go back to the library homepage tab click on the CDs and DVDs tab on the scroll down menu of the CDs and DVDs tab, if you know the main actor’s name, click word/s anywhere or if you know the name of the movie click title word/s NOTE: the default search engine for CDs and DVDs limits your search to UMBC but you can reconfigure this setting once you become more familiar with the website once you find the DVD you are looking for, check to see if it is available online by clicking on the UMBC Library link next to location If your DVD has not been checked out, write down the call number and have a Library employee help you locate it in the Library. FIGURE 11 FIGURE 12 FINDING A JOURNAL ARTICLE (ONLINE) go back to the Library homepage tab click on the Articles tab NOTE: For Off-campus use by UMBC students, faculty & staff only on the right hand side of display under the Articles tab, click on Academic Search Premier then click on Connect to Academic Search Premier (Ebsco) NOTE: Provides full-text for over 3,400 scholarly journals covering the social sciences, humanities, education, sciences, and more. Funded by the Maryland Digital Library (MDL). use the search engine to search for articles found in Journals that UMBC has an online subscription of FIGURE 13

  7. CONCLUSION Access to a wealth of information is only a click away UMBC offers numerous Library services to it’s members and affiliates even before walking into the Library
