Why a National Platform for Biodiversity Research? • Provide information about who is doing what in Ireland • Act as a forum for discussion and dissemination of information • Present a rational case for biodiversity research in Ireland • Seek adequate funding for Irish biodiversity research • Adopt a similar procedure to many other European countries
European Links • Links to the EU-funded BioPlatform project • Links to the European Platform for Biodiversity Research Strategy (EPBRS) • 2 meetings per year, hosted by EU presidency • Support of European Biodiversity Research Strategy, and the 5 European Biodiversity Action Plans
Representation • Aim to cover as wide a group of stakeholders as possible: • Third level education & research • State bodies, eg National Parks & Wildlife, EPA • Other Government Departments • NGOs • Private consultancy companies

Main Tasks of the Secretariat • Set up National Platform • August 2003 • Attend other EPBRS meetings in Europe • Host Irish EPBRS meeting • May 2004 • Set up web site • www.biodiversityireland.ie • Define a biodiversity research agenda
Database of Biodiversity Research in Ireland • Aims: • To find gaps in coverage • To support action 40 of the National Biodiversity Plan • To provide information on who is doing what, and where they are • Working Group to meet shortly to define how this can be achieved
Database of Biodiversity Research • Will provide: • Names & contacts of active researchers • Types of research undertaken • Whether current or dated • Whether publications have been produced • Provide relevant links • What it will NOT do: • Provide any sort of record system for habitats, taxonomic groups • Provide a detailed bibliography
Web Site • A forum for information on Irish Biodiversity Research • Will be continually developed • Will ultimately contain a directory of biodiversity research in Ireland
