A New Faculty for the New (Next) Generation Orlando L. Taylor Vice Provost for Research Graduate Dean Howard University otaylor@howard.edu
Welcome to the New Academy for the 21st Century • You are about to become “Stewards of Your Disciplines” by acquiring the Ph.D. • You will influence the “entire” NEW AMERICAN CENTURY by writing on the minds of students that will be more diverse & global than ever. • You will be creators of New Knowledge in the greatest century of discovery in human history. • BUT YOU WILL DO SO IN A VASTLY DIFFERENT NATION AND WORLD.
Some Aspects of New America and the New Academy • People of Color will be the majority by 2050! • Globalization & Interdisciplinarity will be a norm. • Students will have never known a time when there was no Internet. • There will be more to know than ever! • “Smart” classrooms will be normal classrooms. • Technology will not be “whether,” but “which.” • Diversity will/may be seen as a benefit for all??
We Cannot Afford To Lose ONE of You on Your Journeys!! • Today, only 5% of faculty are African Americans; 2 ½ % Latino/Hispanic; 3 % Asian American; Less than 1% Native American and other groups. • We need YOU to replace the almost ½ of all current faculty who will retire in the next 10-15 years! • College & university students of ALL groups need diverse faculty to become competitive globally.
….At This Institute • You will discuss the Art and Science of teaching and learning. • You will learn how to seek and obtain a faculty job on a campus that suits your interests & needs. • You will learn why and how to obtain a Postdoc to match your career goals. • Undergrads will learn how to prepare for and select a Ph.D. program to match academic & career goals. • Faculty members will increase their knowledge on how to mentor students for future faculty life.
As a Future Faculty Person of Color • Become a “Steward of Your Discipline.” • Suggest academic and research priorities, questions and methodologies from your cultural perspectives. • Pursue research on teaching/learning in order to improve learning of underachievers. • Recognize that you need NOT be a “Minority Expert.” • Never be the smartest person in a room—or think that your are!!!
To Get the Most Out of the Institute • Have conversations with individuals from a different race or ethnic group. • Have conversations with individuals from a different discipline or institution. • Be open to thinking “outside the box.” • Share perspectives of your racial or ethnic group with others as you search for TRUTH. • Be open to hearing the cultural perspectives of others.
