  5. Math Class Chemistry Class We just wrote out the formula for calcium acetate Ca(C2H3O2)2 Why do we need the parentheses? Can’t we just leave them off? No. Then we would have CaC2H3O22 BUT calcium acetate doesn’t have 22 oxygen atoms! Can’t we just double the acetate subscripts? CaC4H6O4? No. Writing it like this destroys the structural cues hidden in the formula. Analogy of two people hiding in a closet… • Y * Y * Y = Y3 • Would you write (Y)3 ? No, it would be a waste of time. • (X+Y)*(X+Y)*(X+Y) = (X+Y)3 • Can you write X+Y3 instead? • No, that has a different meaning - you are only cubing the Y and not quantity of X+Y. When to use parentheses

  6. Does the compound have any polyatomic ions? NO YES When writing the compound, do you need more than one polyatomic ion? NO The formula does NOT need any parentheses NO YES Summing up: Use () when? Do you need to double, triple, etc. a single polyatomic cation or anion? Surround the polyatomic ion(s) with parentheses and add the subscript outside the ( ) YES
