  4. Spot the difference • What is the difference between these three terms: • No sir. • No Sirree. • No suh. Using your own understanding, can you offer an explanation as to why these three speakers growing up within the same region of Alabama say the same thing differently?

  5. Identify it • In groups look at the extract and try to categorise the language the characters use in to idiolect, sociolect and dialect. • Be prepared to explain your choices!

  6. Plenary • In your groups discuss and write down the differences between the three terms we have discussed today: • Idiolect • Sociolect • Dialect
