  1. 1st IABIN Caribbean Meeting Sarita Williams-Peter March 10-13, 2008 Ocho Rios, Jamaica "INTER-AMERICAN BIODIVERSITY INFORMATION NETWORK (IABIN)" Marine Protected Areas Management Effectiveness

  2. Methodology • 2.) 16 new data fields of interest were added to the exiting 19 fields for a total of 36 fields

  3. Data fields exist in MPA Global -- WDPAs • MPA name • Designation type • MPA location (country or territory) • Central latitude & longitude • MPA boundary data (prefereably as a zipped ESRI shapefile or interchange file) • Date MPA was designated (yyyy-mm-dd) • Name & year of legislation/agreement used to designate the MPA • Total area of MPA (including land)

  4. New data fields added -- Unique for Caribbean 12 Countries • Reason(s) for designation of MPA • Is the MPA part of a larger spatial marine resource management plan • List up to 2 primary MPA objectives • Management plan exists for MPA • Start & end dates of management plan • List top two critical management activities • Budget needed for MPA (USD) • Budget available for MPA (USD) • Source(s) of budget & values (USD) • Number of staff Permanent Temporary

  5. 600 MPAs cover approximately 2.2 million km 2.6% of the world’s oceans.

  6. Growth global marine area protected areas

  7. The Ramsar Convention on Wetlands (www.ramsar.org/) has adopted a target for 250 million hectares of wetlands to be well managed in designated sites

  8. Evaluation Methodology • Convention on Biological Diversity has adopted a target of 275 million hectares of inland waters habitats to be conserved in protected areas by 2010. • CBD report on the effectiveness of 30 per cent of their protected areas by 2010.

  9. We are not going to make 2010-2012 targets

  10. PA Management Effectiveness Marine Park Global Management Effectiveness Objectives: • Provide harmonized Database where trends can be analyzed by park, country, region. • Assist countries with reporting commitments. CBD • Able to supply consistent data to allow monitoring of progress over time • Easy to complete by protected area staff

  11. Synergy IWCAM-IABIN Marine Initiative Referring to data and info section - what is institution housing regional database? Can it include IABIN MP effectiveness database Budget and staffing? What is demo and lessons database? What is data storage facility -- CHM? How does this relate to Program of Work CBD, MEA, and RAMSAR targets. Missing?

  12. Synergies Increase in protected area -- This indicator measures the area of protected land ecosystems, inland water ecosystems, and marine ecosystems expressed as a percentage of the total area of the ecosystem in question. It represents the extent to which areas important for conserving biodiversity are protected from incompatible uses.

  13. 2nd Objective Conservation/Protection of Ecosystems and Nat All TABLE 1. Group want to work with IWCAM on Issues as presented in Table 1. Beach loss, Biodiversity loss, Coral Reef Degradation, mangrove degradation/loss, sea grass, Solid waste mangt.

  14. Caribbean IABIN Group Data compilation, Knowledge management and capacity bldg • To complete regional workplan under direction of: • Dionne Newell, IABIN Executive Committee – Lead IABIN Caribbean Initiative -- Subcommittee Volunteers: • Lakesha & Janine -- Bahamas • Jam -- Omar • SLU – Sarita • T&T – Allan • DR-Hispanola – Hector • Helena UNEP-WCMC-WDPA

  15. Caribbean IABIN Group Data compilation, Knowledge management and capacity bldg • 3 distinct but related IABIN initiatives: • PA Thematic Network -- 8 fields for 34 Countries for all PA • Marine Initiative -- 12 country database with 20+19 fields as pilot on management effectiveness of marine protected areas • Ecosystem Thematic Network – marine terrestrial, freshwater ecosystem database.
