  3. Goal of Parent Night • To learn about Future Ready Core high school graduation requirements. • To understand courses your child must take to meet graduation requirements. • To better understand the rigor of high school. • To lessen the stress and anxiety of high school transition time.

  8. College Planning? College Admission Offices pay careful attention to the following: • Grade Point Average (GPA) • Difficulty of course load • SAT/ACT scores • Class rank • HS and community activities, involvement • Recommendations • Essays

UNC Systems Minimum Requirements • Language- 6 Credits Total English- 4 Credits Second Language- 2 credits (recommended that highest level be taken in 12th grade) • Math- 4 Credits Total (NC Math I,II,III and a Math beyond Math III is required to be taken in the 12th Grade) • Science- 3 Credits Total (Earth Science, Biology, Physical Science or Chemistry) • Social Studies- 4 Credits Total (World History, American History I & II, Civics and Economics)

  11. Honors Level Classes - What Does It Take? • Independent motivation • All reading is done at home. Class time is for enrichment, discussion, and instruction. The focus is on analysis rather than basic comprehension. • Vocabulary is geared toward SAT prep. • A or high B test average.

  12. What Does It Take • Student enjoys reading and multi-tasking. • Student completes homework regularly and successfully. • Student has good study skills and regularly performs well on assessments in middle school classes. • An accelerated, advanced course requiring significantly more work.

ADVANTAGES OF APCLASSES 1) A student whose transcript shows AP courses may receive higher consideration for admission from colleges and universities. 2) Students scoring a three or higher on the AP examination may be given college or university credit and/or placement, thus enabling them to graduate early from colleges or universities.

  19. Block Schedule • Students take 4 courses/credits each semester. • Each course is 90 minutes • An entire year’s worth of curriculum is compressed into one semester. • Grades start accumulating from day one! No time to “catch up” later in the year!!

  23. English—9th Grade Choices: English I (Academic) Honors English I (Honors) Enloe offers Civilizations and Cultures* which combines English I and Civics and Economics – can be taken at the academic or honors level. *More information may be found on Enloe’s course description guide.

High School CoursesTaken in Middle School If your student completes a high school level course in middle school they will receive a high school credit if they: • Earn a passing grade in the course. AND • Achieve level III, IV or V on EOC (if applicable). • Students will earn 1 high school credit. • Classes taken in middle school do not count in GPA.

  28. Foreign Languages? When to do it? • Not required for graduation but required for admission to the UNC college system. • 2 credits (minimum) are required for admission to the UNC college system. • Second language is generally not recommended for 9th graders unless they started a second language in middle school.

  29. Attendance matters and is critical for success in High School 2 absences in a block schedule class is like missing 4 days of learning.

  30. Driver Eligibility Students must pass 70% of courses (3 out of 4 on a block schedule) to be able to obtain or maintain their driver’s license!

  32. Registering for 9th Grade Courses

  33. When Will Registration Begin? • Registration will begin March 4th. • All 8th Grade students will receive a packet of information that includes course selections for their high school and teacher recommendations. • Core class recommendations are based on high school guidelines and student performance. • Students with questions are encouraged to email Ms. Coccarelli or submit a note outside her office.

  34. Registering in Power Schools • Students will use their NC Ed Cloud log in to register on line. All students should have claimed their accounts earlier this year. • This link can be found on the Carnage website under Student Links.

Registration Worksheet • We encourage students to register using teacher recommendations, however parents may choose a higher or lower level of course. • Waivers are required at Apex Friendship, Enloe, and Southeast Raleigh when selecting a course other than the course recommended by teacher if you are waiving up a level.

  37. High School Graduation Plan • All students will complete a high school graduation plan for their assigned high school. • Students will have the option to complete graduation plans at home or at school during the week of their scheduled registration time through their Social Studies class. • Foster: 3/4/19 & 3/5/19 • Snead: 3/13/19 & 3/14/19 • Johnson: 3/20/19 & 3/21/19 • Students will begin to fill out their 9th grade course selections based on teacher recommendations.

  40. Survival Tips: • Attend summer orientation program offered at the high school. • Get involved in clubs. • Keep master calendar or agenda of assignments, tests, projects, etc. • Use PowerSchoolsregulary. • Establish communication with teacher early in the semester.

  41. Thoughts To Ponder • Core Course recommendations are made by current teachers for 9th Grade. • The block schedule pace is fast. Each block is 450 minutes/week! • Think carefully about high school activities and how much time they will take (band, athletics, drama etc.) • Expect homework most nights. • Students do not get to select which courses they get each semester.
