  2. SEEK FIRST TO UNDERSTAND The reason why you should always listen before you talk because the person your talking to might have something important to say.

  3. THEN TO BE UNDERSTOOD Before you step in another’s shoes you have to learn how to remove your own. “Everyone likes them. They’re the hottest thing going right now.” “I’m looking for something different.” “I promise you. You’ll love them.” “But I…” “Listen. I’ve been selling shoes for ten years and I know a good shoe when I see it.”

  4. SEEK FIRST TO UNDERSTAND • To understand someone you must listen to them. Sometimes the problem is that just most of us don’t know how to listen.

  5. THEN TO BE UNDERSTOOD • You need to understand the person before you ever come up with a conclusion for what their saying. The person might be having a bad day and you might say something like, “My mom and dad just got a divorce and my girlfriend dumped me.” But if you were not listening to them you might say something like this “wow that sounds really cool.” Then your friend might think you’re a jerk.

  6. SEEK FIRST TO UNDERSTND THEN TO BE UNDERSTOOD • When we put these two skills together than it makes you a even better person. The reason how is if your friend is very depressed than you will know how to be more caring and understanding to them. The next time you talk to someone than you can apply these two magic habits and your life will be better.
