SUDAN MINE ACTION PROGRAM Key clearance challenges
Key challenges • Security Situation. • Information Management. • Funding and Resources.
Security Situation • Since June 2011, a new fighting and clashes have started in two states (Southern Kordufan and Blue Nile). • This situation does not allow Sudan to deploy any demining capacities to these states which are considered highly affected areas. • As the magnitude of the problem is unkown and could not be addressed until the situation improve, therefore, Sudan has no clear deadline for those two states.
Information Management • Sudan has a huge challenges regarding the quality and accuracy of the information. • Since 2009 around 732 areas were found and added to the database. • All hazards data need reassessment to allow Sudan to develop good plans to address the remaining problem. • The new fighting may result of a huge contamination with ERWs. This will require additional survey efforts to identify the size of problem.

Funding and resources • Sudan faces many challenges to secure a sustainable funding for the program which have affected the clearance operations during the last three years. • The decreasing of the international funding for mine action activities does not allow Sudan to fulfill the funding gaps to meet the planned activities.
