The Woman In Black Lesson Objective: To be able to use key words in a summary of chapter one
Rational Protagonist • Rational – logical, unemotional • Protagonist – the character who tells the story • By creating a RATIONAL PROTAGONIST the story becomes more scary, and more believable • If it was told by an irrational person then we would think that they were making it all up! • Are you more likely to believe you rational or irrational friend if they told you they’d seen a ghost?
A Frame Narrative • A story within a story • Creates even more suspense – is a ghost story convention • To provide a contrasting setting to the one that the protagonist is familiar with • Eel Marsh House is the complete opposite to his own home Monk’s Piece
Foreshadowing • A literary technique used by authors to provide clues for the reader to be able to predict what might occur later on in the story. • Find TWO quotes which demonstrate the author’s use of foreshadowing • Hint: we wrote out at least 2 last lesson
Chapter 1 (part 2) • Kipps sits with his family while they all tell ghost stories • The family encourage him to tell a ghost story • He is very reluctant to do this • He tells the reader that he will now write his ghost story – the story of his past that had been the ‘shadow’ which had haunted him…
Creating tension and suspense Nothing so blood-curdling and becreepered and crude – not so… so laughable. The truth is quite other, and altogether more terrible. Yes, I had a story, a true story, a story of haunting and evil, fear and confusion, horror and tragedy. I had always known in my heart that the experience would never leave me, that it was now woven into my very fibres, an inextricable part of my past… • Write down one of the following quotations from the opening chapter that help to create an atmosphere of tension and suspense Top tip! • Try to isolate key words or phrases and analyse precisely their effect
