Exterior Barriers • Kids parenting siblings when they arrive home • Bed bugs • Not sleeping at night • Lice • CPS Abuse cases • Parents prostituting • Drugs in the home • No beds in the home • ELL- speaks little English
Every barrier has the right to stop learning until we no longer give the right by providing a solution!
External Factors • Kids parenting siblings when they arrive home • Changed our grading practices • Offered study hall during school to complete work • Bed bugs • Furniture and clothing support • Education on bed bugs • Medicating the bites • Not sleeping at night • Sleep for 30 minutes during morning • Meet with parents
Dealing with external factors • Lice • Onsite cleaning • CPS Abuse cases • Parents prostituting • Heart to heart talks • Drugs in the home • Frequent unexpected home visits from principal • No beds in the home • Provide beds • ELL- speaks little English
AHA Moment ARE WE A SCHOOL THAT OFFERS SERVICES OR ARE WE A SERVICE PROVIDER THAT OFFERS SCHOOL
Heart wrenching question How do I do everything and still have time to be an effective principal? If I believe that all students can learn, what must they learn to be effective? If I believe that my school is my students ticket out of their situation, how do I influence instruction? How do I get rid of the barriers while still being sensitive to their needs, yet focusing on their freedom- education!
